‘Hurry up Tomorrow’ Announced
Following a weeklong hold-up, The Weeknd released a new album on Thursday night.
“Hurry Up Tomorrow” is the concluding and third chapter in The Weeknd’s “After Hours” trilogy, which he announced along with a tour on Friday morning.
The album was initially scheduled to be released on January 24. Following the destruction of vast areas and the displacement of hundreds due to wildfires in the Los Angeles region, the artist decided to delay the release and call off a related event planned at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California.
Funds from “Take Me Back To LA” − a song on the latest album − will be contributed to the LA Regional Food Bank, as stated in a release announcing the initiative. Following the concert cancellation, The Weeknd donated $1 million to the LAFD Foundation, a firefighting group, GoFundMe’s Wildfire Relief Fund, and the LA Regional Food Bank.
Currently, the project is available on streaming platforms, providing fans with a glimpse into the enigmatic artist’s creative process. Building on 2020’s “After Hours” and 2022’s “Dawn FM,” “Hurry Up Tomorrow” possesses a confessional tone − rich in conflicted love tracks, sparse on ballads. It includes voicemails, heavy breathing, and pauses in conversation, occasionally breaking the fourth wall to share with listeners the feelings that inspire the music.
In a recent interview with Variety, the artist suggested that this album could mark the conclusion of The Weeknd— the persona that Abel Tesfaye has utilized for his performances.
“It’s a headspace I’ve gotta get into that I just don’t have any more desire for. I feel like it comes with so much,” he told the outlet. “When is the right time to leave, if not at your peak? Once you understand who I am too much, then it’s time to pivot.”
That pivot was seemingly previewed in the accompanying text for “Hurry up Tomorrow.” “Whether it’s the end of a trilogy or the end of The Weeknd, Tomorrow is here,” the project’s description on Apple Music reads.
The Weeknd goes deep on ‘Enjoy the Show’
Featuring his distinctive falsetto singing, the music delivers an otherworldly quality yet intermittently punctuates it with classic disco loops.
Documenting heartbreak, fear, and struggles within the industry, the songs seamlessly flow together, intended to be experienced as a complete unit rather than individually. Addiction, a topic extensively explored by The Weeknd, looms large on the album, especially in “Enjoy The Show.” In this work, the artist hints at a circular conflict and appears to signal to the audience that this is his ultimate performance.
“And when the curtains call / I hope you mourn,” he sings, “but if you don’t, I hope you enjoyed the (expletive) show / Let me know.”
In “Baptized In Fear,” he sings about a near-drowning experience, either through metaphor or literal storytelling, and the choice to live instead of surrendering − a recurring theme throughout the project.
The album by The Weeknd includes ‘The Abyss’ and ‘Reflections Laughing.’
The album boasts unexpected collaborations, including Florence + The Machine and Travis Scott on “Reflections Laughing,” as well as Lana Del Rey on “Abyss.”
In “Sao Paulo,” a single already released featuring Anitta, The Weeknd rushes through parts of the album with an exhilarating techno rhythm.
