MSNBC canceled Joy Reid’s program

MSNBC has allegedly canceled longtime host Joy Reid’s program in what appears to be a significant programming overhaul at the liberal network.

In a conversation with the New York Times, two individuals with knowledge of the changes informed the publication that Reid’s 7pm program, The ReidOut, is being discontinued amid a lineup rearrangement led by the network’s new president, Rebecca Kutler.

Reid’s last episode is set to air sometime this coming week, based on what two individuals shared with the outlet. They mentioned that MSNBC intends to fill Reid’s time with a new program co-hosted by three anchors – Symone Sanders-Townsend, Alicia Menendez, and Michael Steele – who presently co-host The Weekend show.

Townsend is a Democratic advisor and former counsel to ex-vice president Kamala Harris, who lost the presidential election in November to Donald Trump. Menendez works as a television analyst. Steele is the past lieutenant governor of Maryland and also served as chair of the Republican National Committee from 2009 until 2011.

The termination of a program helmed by one of the network’s top figures occurs roughly a month after MSNBC’s previous president, Rashida Jones, resigned from the network, concluding a nearly four-year term. Kutler, at that time MSNBC’s senior vice-president for content strategy, took over from Jones.

After Jones’s exit, Mark Lazarus, chairman of NBCUniversal Media Group, informed the network’s staff, “We have a lot to do.”

In January, Chuck Todd, a well-known anchor and former host of Meet The Press, revealed he was departing from NBC News. The statement came after Todd’s significant involvement in opposing NBC’s choice to bring on Ronna McDaniel, the previous RNC chair, in March 2024.

The progressive network ultimately eliminated McDaniel, who led the RNC during Trump’s initial presidential term. Cesar Conde, chair of the NBCUniversal News Group, informed staff that he had heard “the legitimate concerns” voiced from throughout the network.

Reid told Rachel Maddow

At the time of NBC’s decision to drop McDaniel, Reid told Rachel Maddow, another major MSNBC host, “I know I felt very strongly about it, I know you felt very strongly about it … and I just have to say, when somebody does the right thing, I feel like it should be acknowledged as publicly as we acknowledged our outrage … I know how I feel about it.”

“I’m grateful to Cesar for actually making the right decision. I think it was the right decision.”
