Broccoli recalled due to Listeria
A recall was announced for Marketside Fresh Broccoli Florets, a brand of 12-ounce pre-washed and ready-to-eat broccoli florets available at Walmart, affecting Louisiana and 19 additional states.
On December 31, the Food and Drug Administration revealed that Braga Fresh, a company from California, issued a cautionary notice regarding florets that have a Dec. 10 expiration date because of potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
On January 27, the FDA released a notice categorizing the broccoli recall as a Class 1 recall, the most serious type of recall indicating that the product may present a significant health risk and potential fatality.
Although it is long past its expiration date and unavailable in stores, the advisory stated that anyone who has the broccoli in their freezers should avoid consuming it and should throw it away. The recall is not relevant to any other Marketside items.
The contaminated broccoli bags can be recognized by a universal product code of 6 81131 32884 5 located on the back, a best if used by date of Dec. 10, and a lot code of BFFG327A6 found on the front of the bag.
Listeria monocytogenes can lead to severe and occasionally deadly infections in young kids, individuals with health issues, or older adults. Individuals in good health might experience temporary symptoms like elevated fever, headaches, stiffness, nausea, and abdominal discomfort or diarrhea. An infection may also lead to miscarriages and stillbirths.
