Donald Trump wins the 47th US presidency in a remarkable political comeback

Donald Trump Elected US President

Donald Trump has been chosen as the 47th president of the United States in a surprising political comeback that shocked the nation and the globe.

Donald Trump

Donald Trump is the first convicted felon to achieve victory in the White House. At 78, he is the oldest individual to have ever been elected to this position.

The outcome will raise concerns in foreign capitals due to Trump’s erratic leadership approach and gestures towards authoritarian figures like Vladimir Putin from Russia and Kim Jong-un from North Korea. His opponent, Vice-President Kamala Harris, along with some of his former White House officials, labeled him a menace to democracy and even a fascist.

However, the American voting public demonstrated a readiness to overlook such worries and entrust the nuclear codes to the real estate developer transformed into a reality TV personality once again.

Donald Trump triumphed over Harris, a Democrat aiming to make her own history as the first woman, first Black woman, and first South Asian American to become president in the US’s 248-year past.

As votes were tallied during the night, Donald Trump unexpectedly secured North Carolina first, being the initial battleground state declared, and later he also clinched victories in Georgia and Pennsylvania.

As early as 1:20 AM ET, at Trump’s election watch event in Palm Beach, Florida, a loud and lasting cheer erupted when Fox News declared Pennsylvania for the Republican candidate. “It’s over!” shouted a man. A young man wearing a black Trump hat yelled: “Fuck Joe Biden! Fuck her!”

Donald Trump Addressed the Crowd

Following 2am, Trump appeared to address the crowd, flanked by his family, trusted advisors, and JD Vance, the far-right Ohio senator chosen as his vice-presidential selection.

“This is a movement like nobody’s ever seen before,” Donald Trump said. “This is I believe the greatest political movement of all time. There’s never been anything like this in this country and now it’s going to reach a new level of importance, because we’re going to help our country heal.”

“We’re going to fix our borders. We’re going to fix everything about our country … I will not rest until we have delivered the strong, safe and prosperous America that our children deserve, this will truly be the golden age of America.”

Donald Trump Addressing the Crowd

At 5:37 am ET, the Associated Press declared Trump the winner in Wisconsin, bringing his electoral college total to 277 with the state’s 10 votes, exceeding the 270 votes required to secure the presidency.

In Congress, Republicans regained the US Senate, but the control of the House of Representatives was still uncertain on Wednesday morning, as many of the tightest races remained undecided.

Harris, 60, championed reproductive rights and individual freedoms as a focal point and supported a federal law enshrining access to safe abortion. Her loss signifies a devastating, anxiety-provoking setback for supporters that brings to mind Hillary Clinton’s painful loss in 2016. She was scheduled to talk later on Wednesday.

However, for Donald Trump, the most improbable comeback is now finished. Numerous analysts believed that his loss to Joe Biden in 2020 marked the conclusion of his political journey, particularly when a furious mob of his backers – driven by his falsehood that the election was rigged – attacked the US Capitol on 6 January 2021, leading to his second impeachment.

Donald Trump’s Hold

Although Donald Trump’s hold on the Republican party was momentarily tested, it remained strong. The New Yorker, who has been married three times and was deemed responsible for sexual abuse, continued to be an unexpected hero for evangelical Christians and the white working class, with polls indicating he made modest yet notable gains among African American and Latino voters.

Four legal cases – including a conviction on 34 felony charges for hiding hush-money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels – would have severely harmed any other politician yet seemingly bolstered Trump’s support among his “Make America Great Again” (Maga) followers.

Donald Trump hurled insults as he dismissed challengers to secure the Republican presidential nomination for a third straight time. Right before the July party convention, he endured an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, an escape that numerous allies viewed as a message from God (another would-be assassin was apprehended at one of Trump’s golf courses in Florida in September).

In July, following a poor debate performance, Joe Biden withdrew as the expected Democratic nominee and designated Harris as his successor. Her “politics of joy” injected new energy into Democrats and seemed to alter the course of a contest that had been fading.

The competition lasted just over 100 days, the briefest in recent history, set against the context of hurricanes locally and conflicts abroad. Trump received substantial support from the world’s wealthiest individual, tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, who donated millions of dollars to voters in battleground states that signed a petition associated with his political action committee.

The competition appeared incredibly tight right up to the finish. Nonetheless, Trump’s considerable win indicates that his message – frequently crude and meandering, dishonest and bigoted – continued to resonate with voters frustrated with the political status quo. It also served as a rejection of Biden’s productive tenure in office and his serious concerns regarding the threat that Donald Trump represents to American institutions and international safety.

The outcome of the election poses a risk of upheaval and widespread demonstrations nationwide. Donald Trump campaigned on a now-recognizable theme of nativist populism that vowed the largest deportation of undocumented individuals, whom he labeled “animals” with “bad genes” that were “poisoning the country’s blood.” He expressed dissatisfaction by stating that the US resembled a “garbage can” for the rest of the globe.

The ex-president framed his criminal charges as a political assault, promising “revenge” against those he views as adversaries and adopting more alarming language. He issued foreboding remarks about potentially utilizing the military internally against “enemies within” and vowed to grant pardons to those jailed for the January 6 uprising.

Donald Trump will be the first president to hold non-consecutive terms since Grover Cleveland, who served from 1885 to 1889 and again from 1893 to 1897.

As vice president, Harris will oversee a joint session of Congress in January to validate the election results.
