BBC Strictly Come Dancing professional criticizes judges for ‘overmarking’ and criticizes star’s ‘worst dance so far’, 2024

Strictly Come Dancing pro criticizes judges for ‘overmarking’, slams star’s ‘worst dance’

Ex-Strictly Come Dancing pro Ola Jordan criticized judges’ scores last week, stating some contestants were scored too high and one had their ‘worst dance so far’.

The dancer, who exited her position as a professional on the BBC dance competition in 2015, has commented on the outcomes of week 6 of the competition, where the participants danced Halloween-themed routines.

Jamie Borthwick and Michelle Tsiakkas were leading the scoreboard with a score of 38 for their performance of an American Smooth dance to The Addams Family theme song. Dr. Punam Krishan and Gorka Márquez scored 26 for their Tango to Sweet Dreams and were the subsequent pair eliminated from the Strictly Come Dancing.

Ola Criticized

However, Ola contested the judges’ score and accused them of ‘overmarking’ the contestants. The winner of Strictly Come Dancing in 2009 informed Mecca Bingo:  “It was way overmarked. They were throwing tens like there was nothing.”

“Jamie and Michelle got two 10s. Ten is like perfection, but that wasn’t perfection. Sarah and Vito got 10s, maybe one 10, but two 10s? I disagree.”

Ola also slammed Chris McCausland and his dancing partner Dianne Buswell’s samba to the Bee Gees’ Staying Alive, stating it was Chris’ ‘worst dance so far,’ according to the Express.

She said: “Chris’ dance wasn’t great this week. I certainly didn’t like it. I think the reason people say that is because, you know, people love him and they want him to do well – the same as me; I like him, and I like his jokes, and he’s the sort of person that you would want to see go and win a competition like Strictly.”

“I’m definitely behind him. But you’ve got to call it out when it’s not great, and it was certainly not this week. He was probably, for me, his worst dance so far.”

Although Ola had a different opinion, judge Motsi Mabuse praised the performance as a ‘fun way to start the show’ and complimented Chris on ‘nailed the character,’ while head judge Shirley Ballas thought he did ‘incredibly well’ but ‘overcooked the bounce’ during the dance in Strictly Come Dancing.

Anton Du Beke praised the timing as ‘exceptional’ but criticized the ‘lacked fluidity’, as Craig Revel Horwood said: “Too much hopping, needed stretch and smoothness, shoulders raised, no hip action on the voltas but immaculate rhythm and magnificent acting”.

The duo tied for last place on the leaderboard alongside Gorka Marquez and Dr Punam Krishan. During the results show, Chris confessed he was worried about being eliminated next as a celebrity contestant.

Chris on his Passing to Next Round

He shared: “We’ve lost four people so far this series, two of them on Sambas. And we’ve had four dance offs and three of them have had people who’ve gone on first so the maths is against us this week.”

Yet, Chris felt extremely relieved upon realizing that he had made it through to the seventh week of the BBC competition. Host Claudia Winkleman of Strictly Come Dancing was surprised by how much the announcement meant to Chris.

Host’s Remarks

The host said: “Chris and Dianne your reaction to Tess saying your name was quite something.” Chris admitted he was worried his time was up as the show’s first ever blind contestant said: “It wasn’t my finest moment.”
