Ralph Fiennes reveals “28 Years Later” Trilogy plot details

Ralph Fiennes is getting fans ready to revisit the zombie apocalypse as the 28 Days Later series continues after almost twenty years.

Leading up to the release of 28 Years Later on June 20, 2025, the double Oscar nominee shared fresh storyline information and an update on the new trilogy, which will start with the original writer/director team of Alex Garland and Danny Boyle.

Two Have Been Shot

“It’s three films, of which two have been shot,” Fiennes told.

Fiennes About The Plot

Fiennes described the storyline in detail, “Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities. And it centers on a young boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother. He leads his mother through this beautiful northern English terrain. But of course, around them hiding in forests and hills and woods are the infected. But he finds a doctor who is a man we might think is going to be weird and odd, but actually is a force for good.”

Earlier this year, there were discussions for Nia DaCosta to direct the next installment titled 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, with a screenplay by Garland.

28 days later comes 28 years later

Following his role in 28 Days Later (2002) and absence in the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, Cillian Murphy returns as Jim in 28 Years Later, playing a former bicycle messenger who discovers the ‘Rage Virus’ has destroyed London after waking from a coma. Additionally, he fulfills the role of executive producer.

Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, and Edvin Ryding are also part of the cast for the upcoming sequel.
