OMITB Latest Season Ends on a Joyful note

Does it seem strange that the best episode of Only Murders In The Building’s fourth season is its last one? Okay, the Long Island episode was also extremely funny. While it may not be completely unexpected, it is certainly a pleasure to witness the seamless way everything falls into place in “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” Even after discovering the killer’s sad reason and another person dying in the Arconia, that’s still the case. The Hulu series ending the year by focusing on character moments and relationships is fitting for season four.
This episode serves as a good example of why practicality is not as important for a TV show like this. We are not interested in ordinary detective tales, an aspect that OMITB is currently struggling with. Why is Detective Williams not contacted when Marshall admits he has locked Mabel in her apartment? However, it’s fine. We witness Oliver and Charles ridiculously saving their friend from an armed crazy person.
They walk cautiously on the 14th-floor ledge from Vince’s house to Mabel’s, overcoming their fear of heights with the “step and drag” technique. It is a visually stunning and eccentric version of OMITB that we are familiar with and adore. This episode also highlights the strong friendships on the show and, most importantly, Oliver and Loretta’s lovely wedding. This is the most sentimental the writers have ever been so far.
Main Mystery of Season
Naturally, in order to cover all of this, the conclusion must tie up the main mystery of the season. I was nearly eager for them to finish quickly because, as expected, the entire thing was weak. I mean no disrespect to Sazz, portrayed charmingly by Jane Lynch in this episode, but I was eager for the mystery to be resolved as it was the least captivating aspect of “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” The sequence unfolds like this: The two men manage to enter Mabel’s window, and Charles reveals his Eva Longoria’s 19-in-1 tool, using it to force Marshall to confess.
It is shown in flashbacks that Sazz continued to act as a mentor for Marshall following the accident on Ron Howard’s set. His dedication to his craft inspired her so much that she decided to pursue her dream of creating a movie, with the intention of using the earnings to build a trampoline park in New Jersey.
The first step involved locating the appropriate hero for the screenplay. Inspiration hit while working on the Brazzos comeback with the help of her closest friend. Sazz recognized that Charles, Oliver, and Mabel’s podcast would make a great movie and a tribute to her best friend. The only error she made was giving her sole copy of OMITB: The Movie to Marshall for feedback.
Unfortunately, we are all aware of what happened next. Marshall betrayed Sazz by stealing the script, pitching it to Bev Melon at Paramount under a new identity, and showing no remorse when confronted by Sazz. He also didn’t appear too disturbed about tracking her to New York City and shooting her before she exposed the truth. He killed Glen Stubbins before the Irish stuntman could identify him. Marshall genuinely only shows remorse for mistakenly hurting Zach Galifianakis. “He was incredibly hilarious in The Hangover.”
Considering the high gloss and glamour of season four, this reveal seems lackluster. Couldn’t Marshall have selected a more discreet location instead of the actual building where the podcasters skillfully investigate murders? Let’s not dwell on it too much, just as we won’t investigate how Jan has been lurking in the Arconia’s hidden corridors for three weeks, planning to seek vengeance for Sazz’s death.
Just in time, she appears to rescue the trio, eliminate Marshall, and is then returned to prison. It’s nice to catch a glimpse of you briefly, Amy Ryan without inhibitions. I look forward to your prompt return.
Having all the details finalized, OMITB progresses to the delightful, incredibly heartwarming aspect: Oliver and Loretta’s wedding in the Arconia’s courtyard with a chuppah and an abundance of flowers. I had a big smile on my face as I watched Charles and Mabel escort Oliver down the aisle, gazing proudly at their silly pal. (Side comment: The exceptional thing was Steve Martin’s emotional gazes towards Martin Short.)
Loretta confidently walks down the aisle with the support of her son, Dicky, and Oliver’s son, Will. I’m happy that OMITB decided to involve the adult children in the ceremony. We do not get to listen to the complete vows of the joyful couple, but it is unnecessary. The incredibly happy expressions on their faces are effective. However, Loretta Durkin-Putnam’s “Be my man, be my lover, be my friend, be my lover” really affected me.
Final 10 Minutes Contains All
In the final 10 minutes of the episode, there is dancing, tears, drinks, and plenty of laughter. It’s nearly forgettable that there was a murder, but Charles discloses that his wedding guest is Sazz’s ashes. Is this pleasant or unsettling? This all happens after Charles mentions multiple times that typically, when they solve a murder, another one happens immediately after. I’m thrilled that OMITB is becoming more self-referential as it clearly hints at another murder. This time, it is Lester, the doorman at the Arconia.
Lester’s death could potentially be linked to another enigma that OMITB introduces for the fifth season. Sofia (played by Téa Leoni), elegantly approaches Charles and Mabel with a request to hire them to look into the vanishing of her spouse. He is the individual we saw featured in last week’s episode of the news report. They reject the offer, but Sofia, who is part of the mafia, still claims that his disappearance is related to the building. Doesn’t it have to be linked to Lester? He has been employed at the Arconia for many years, therefore, there is a wealth of knowledge to be gathered from him.
I felt anxious about OMITB being renewed because I didn’t want the show to lose its magic. However, the final episode has actually strengthened my trust in the writers and actors. I look forward to seeing how their new role as PIs will enable the show to explore new creative possibilities and venture into exciting new directions. We will discover the answer in 2025.
Random observations
- The opening credits feature interesting Easter eggs, such as references to the flower decorations in the Arconia and Howard carrying Sazz’s Olde Belgium six-pack. Oliver asked, “Where is the young one? We need a pliable brain on this.”
- Loretta quickly goes to New Zealand the day after the wedding because her Grey’s Anatomy spin-off has moved there. Oliver was expected to accompany her, but she informs him she can’t separate him from his friends. Hey, if their courtship was unconventional, why not have an unconventional marriage as well? I hope this doesn’t indicate that Meryl Streep will be leaving OMITB.
- Marshall’s antics to control Mabel in her apartment were highly amusing. And it became even more amusing as he is significantly shorter than her while looking through the window.
- The only aspect of Marshall’s admission that struck me was when he shouted “Hollywood is in ruins!!” That’s a straightforward fact.
- Charles bidding farewell to Sazz (through his subconscious) at the OMITB film location was among the scenes I enjoyed the most in the episode. Will any of the Westies be seen in the future?
- It’s time to start the fan casting for the mafia family. Which other infamous gangsters would you want to see beside Leoni? I believe Danny DeVito is an ideal choice for OMITB. Michael Imperioli would be a blast for clear reasons.
