Matilde Lorenzi Died during Training Accident

Matilde Lorenzi, a 19-year-old Italian skier, passed away following a training session crash in northern Italy, as reported by the country’s defense ministry on Tuesday.

According to a statement from the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, the “Promising Italian skier” had a fall while skiing on the Grawand G1 slope in Val Senales, a valley in the South Tyrol province of northern Italy.

“The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) extends its deepest condolences following the tragic loss of Matilde Lorenzi,” they said. “FISI is in mourning, standing by her family, friends, and everyone who cherished Matilde, honoring her memory today and always.”

Several ex-Olympic skiers including Luca De Aliprandini from Italy, Juan del Campo from Spain, and Michelle Gisin from Switzerland, expressed their condolences for Lorenzi on the FIS Instagram post.

Lindsey Vonn About the Loss

“This is a tragic loss,” said retired U.S. Olympian Lindsey Vonn, who also posted a tribute to Lorenzi on her Instagram story. “Sending my thoughts to her family.”

According to Olympics.com, Lorenzi, a member of the Italian Army’s sports division, was the reigning Italian junior champion last season. Last year in the Junior World Alpine Ski Championships, she placed sixth in downhill and eighth in super-G.

According to the website, she achieved her top performance on the FIS Europa Cup tour with an 11th place result in a super-G event in December 2023.
