Lindsey Vonn coming out of retirement
Lindsey Vonn, an American skier who has won three Olympic medals and four World Championship titles, is making a comeback to the sport of skiing after a five-year retirement in 2019.
Vonn, who is 40 years old, revealed her comeback to skiing in a recent interview with The New York Times released on Thursday. According to U.S. Ski & Snowboard, she will return to the Stifel U.S. ski team right away.
Lindsey Vonn on her Comeback
“I’m trying not to get too far ahead of myself because I have quite a few hoops to jump through,” Vonn told NYT. “Obviously, I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t hope to be racing. I have aspirations. I love to go fast. How fast can I go? I don’t know. But I’m not going to put myself in a position to fail. My goal is to enjoy this, and hopefully that road takes me to World Cup races. I wouldn’t be back on the U.S. ski team if I didn’t have intentions.”
Vonn’s most recent participation in the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships was in Sweden in February 2019. Seven months after having surgery for a partial knee replacement in April, she is now back to skiing. Vonn has been preparing for her return for several months by training and evaluating her knee in order to keep pursuing her career in skiing.
Vonn Hopeful
“Getting back to skiing without pain has been an incredible journey,” Vonn said, per U.S. Ski & Snowboard. “I am looking forward to being back with the Stifel U.S. Ski Team and to continue to share my knowledge of the sport with these incredible women.”
Vonn’s comeback to skiing occurs two decades after she achieved her first World Cup win in 2004. After that, she set numerous records on her way to becoming one of the most awarded U.S. Olympians in history. Vonn has the most wins in a single discipline with 43 downhill victories and 28 in Super-G, surpassing all other male and female skiers. She also has the highest number of wins on the same track (18 in Lake Louise, Canada), the most small globes won by a female athlete (16), and shares the record for most small globes won by a female athlete in one event (8 in downhill).
In total, Vonn has achieved three Olympic medals, comprising of a gold in downhill (2010 Winter Olympics) and two bronzes in Super-G (2010) and downhill (2018); along with eight World Championship medals – two golds, three silvers, and three bronzes; 20 World Cup titles, and 82 World Cup wins.
The 2026 Winter Olympics will take place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy from Feb. 6 to Feb. 22. In her interview with NYT, Vonn did not confirm her participation in the 2026 Winter Olympics.
