Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is said to be in a coma and his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, is purportedly selected as his replacement, as per a report from Israeli media Ynet News, referencing Iran International.

Reportedly, Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of the 85-year-old leader, was chosen in a secret Assembly of Experts meeting on September 26. Khamenei called for the meeting and there were reports of strong pressure on all 60 members to agree on a decision, including alleged threats from Khamenei and his officials.

Reportedly, Mojtaba Khamenei has acquired considerable power in Iran’s government over the last two years. Despite being seldom seen in public, he is recognized for his rumored involvement in quelling the 2009 post-election demonstrations. In 2021, he achieved the status of ayatollah, meeting the constitutional criteria to become the Supreme Leader.

The report states that the choice to appoint Mojtaba as successor was intentionally kept confidential to prevent a large-scale negative reaction from the public. Iran International stated: “The assembly resolved to maintain maximum secrecy over the decision due to fears of widespread public protests.” Reportedly, members were cautioned about facing serious repercussions if any details of the meeting were disclosed.

These rumors emerged after The New York Times published a report in October claiming that the Supreme Leader is “seriously ill.” Yet, there have been no official statements from Iranian officials either confirming or denying these allegations.

These claimed advancements are happening as the Iranian government deals with growing pressures from within and outside, highlighting attempts to stay in control despite rising difficulties.
