Hunter’s Moon: The Brightest Moon in 2024
Should you see the full moon in the upcoming nights, you may observe its brightness.
The Hunter’s Moon occurring this month is not only a supermoon but also the most luminous one of the year.
This is the third supermoon out of four in 2024.
The full moon will be at its highest point on Thursday afternoon in the UK, but will still appear bright and mostly full in the evening and the following nights even when it is hidden below the horizon.
What is the reason behind the name Hunter’s Moon?
Every month we name our full moons based on what is occurring in nature during that time.
The full moon of October is called the Hunter’s Moon because it is when leaves begin to drop and animals have fattened up for winter.
Therefore, at this time of year, ancient communities would increase their hunting activities.
The upcoming full moon on 15 November is known as the Beaver Moon because it corresponds to the period when beavers begin seeking refuge in their lodges before winter.
This will also turn out to be a supermoon.
What exactly is a supermoon?
Two supermoons, the Blue Moon in August and the Harvest Moon in September, have already occurred this year.
This upcoming Hunter’s Moon will mark the third out of four occurrences in the year, shining the brightest.
The Moon follows an elliptical orbit around Earth, leading to periods of greater and lesser distances known as apogee and perigee, respectively.
The Moon was closest to Earth on Wednesday night, approximately 222,055 miles (357,363km) away.
On the other hand, the Moon is 252,088 miles (405,696 km) away from Earth at its furthest point, apogee.
As a result, the Hunter’s supermoon will be approximately 14% brighter and 30% larger than regular full moons.
It will look larger and more luminous, possibly with a reddish hue, as it ascends or descends close to the horizon.
This phenomenon is caused by the “Moon illusion,” which deceives the eye into perceiving the Moon as larger when it is viewed along with structures such as buildings, trees, or hills in the foreground.
Photographers who use a telephoto lens will also create the perception of a bigger Moon.
Weather Prediction
The complete Hunter’s supermoon will appear in the UK at approximately 18:00 BST in the eastern horizon.
Fortunately, there will be plenty of clear skies throughout the UK on Thursday night to witness it, although there may be some clouds and showers in western Scotland initially.
By Friday morning, mist and fog patches will start to form in many parts of the UK.
