Drivers should be cautious as accidents increase after clocks turn back

Drivers are advised to be careful when the clocks are set back on Sunday due to a rise in accidents following the yearly time change, according to recent data.

The biggest motoring organization in the UK, AA, stated that there was an 11% rise in reports for its national Accident Assist service in the two weeks following the October 2023 clocks change, as opposed to the prior two weeks.

Clock Transition

In Britain, clocks transition from British Summer Time by moving forward one hour on the final Sunday of March, to Greenwich Mean Time by moving back one hour on the last Sunday of October.

The October shift results in mornings being brighter sooner, however, nightfall arrives earlier as well.

AA warned that increased collisions are likely in late October and early November due to darker evenings, slippery road surfaces, and drivers’ vision being impaired by the low-lying sun.

Tim Rankin Expressed His Thoughts About Increasing Accidents

Tim Rankin, who is the managing director of AA Accident Assist, expressed that “When the clocks fall back we see a rise in the number of crashes.”

“Many of these could be avoided by making small changes to driving habits.”

“Dazzle by low-lying sun can make a journey challenging, but being in control of your lights is easy.”

“Leaving the stalk on auto is not always the best way forward.”

“We urge drivers to help light the way to help them see others and help others see you.”

The PA news agency analyzed Department for Transport (DfT) data and discovered that there was an average of 183 additional accidents causing injury in November compared to October every year from 2014 to 2023 in Britain.

During that period, the average monthly totals were 10,694 in October and 10,877 in November.

Last year, DfT data indicated that 27 individuals lost their lives and an additional 2,363 individuals were hurt in accidents caused by the sun glaring in drivers’ eyes.
