Spirit Airlines flight coming from Florida was struck by gunfire while attempting to land in Haiti, 2024

Spirit Airlines flight from Florida hit by gunfire

A Spirit Airlines plane departing from Florida was hit by gunfire on Monday as it was landing in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

A representative for the airline informed that Spirit flight 951, originating from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was redirected to Santiago, Dominican Republic, where it landed safely following gunfire.

Upon reaching the Dominican Republic, an examination revealed signs of harm to the aircraft that matched indications of gunfire.

Although no guests on the flight were harmed, one flight attendant on the plane sustained minor injuries and was undergoing assessment by medical staff.

The plane has now been removed from operation, and Spirit is organizing another aircraft to return guests and crew to Fort Lauderdale.

Airline’s Statement

“The safety of our guests and team members is our top priority, and we have suspended our service at Port-au-Prince (PAP) and Cap-Haitien (CAP) pending further evaluation,” the airline stated in a release.

U.S Embassy Stance

The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince acknowledged its awareness of gang initiatives aimed at obstructing travel to and from the city, which could involve armed violence and interference with roads, ports, and airports.

“The security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous,” the U.S. Embassy said. “Travel within Haiti is conducted at your own risk.”

The announcement also mentioned that the U.S. government is unable to ensure the safety of American citizens traveling to airports, borders, or overseas in Haiti.

The embassy advised individuals thinking about traveling to Haiti to prioritize their personal safety.

The safety alerts were issued on the same day Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille was ousted from his position after only six months.
