Apple Launches ‘Apple Intelligence’ iOS 18.2
On Monday, Apple launched iOS 18.1 which brought Apple Intelligence, its AI platform, to the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 Pro models. The latest update also introduces Apple Intelligence features to iPad and Mac, marking a crucial move for Apple as it increases its AI efforts to generate excitement for the recently released iPhone 16 series.
Apple Intelligence is Apple’s way of keeping up with the AI advancements in the industry, especially as other big tech companies are shifting towards cloud-based AI using powerful Nvidia hardware. Apple’s AI strategy focuses on device integration, utilizing the capabilities of the iPhone’s internal chip, and relying on Apple’s servers for more advanced functions.
At first, Apple Intelligence provides various functions such as text tools for proofreading and rewriting, object-removal tools for photos, and notification summaries that combine alerts into one message. Siri has been updated with a new design that lights up the edges of the screen and has improved its ability to provide information on Apple products. Siri’s features are still restricted within apps, but more advanced abilities are anticipated in the upcoming year, including the addition of ChatGPT in iOS 18.2.
Wamsi Mohan Hopeful about Apple Intelligence
Wamsi Mohan, an analyst at Bank of America Securities, is hopeful about the impact Apple Intelligence could have on increasing iPhone sales, predicting that demand could “pick up post initial release of Apple Intelligence in late October.” Nevertheless, in order to access Apple Intelligence, users must choose to participate and be added to a waiting list. In order to utilize the service, individuals must possess an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or an iPhone 16, and once registered, the device will automatically fetch the required AI models.
A notable aspect is the notification summary tool which streamlines receiving updates from sources such as market alerts or group chats. Siri’s latest text interface can be accessed by swiping up and enables quiet questioning. Writing tools now offer the ability for users to rewrite text in both Apple and non-Apple applications, giving them the choice to change the tone to “friendly,” “professional,” or “concise.”
Further improvements apply to Apple’s Mail and Photos apps, with Photos now having the ability to conduct searches using natural language and generate short films using photo collections, enhancing the user’s iOS 18.1 experience.
