Coronation Street changes theme tune after Gail’s heart attack
Coronation Street delivered a strong message to viewers by altering its traditional theme tune in the latest episode to mimic the sound of a flatlining heartbeat after Gail Platt suffered a cardiac arrest.
In episodes shown last week, the veteran character, portrayed by Helen Worth, was hospitalized following a heart attack. In the storyline, the ITV soap opera teamed up with the British Heart Foundation (BHF) to promote awareness of heart disease. The credits at the conclusion of Sunday’s episode were disrupted by a message emphasizing the charity’s work in researching prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heart and circulatory conditions.
Kimberly Hart-Simpson, previously known for her role as Nicky Wheatley in Coronation Street, spoke as a BHF ambassador. In Wednesday’s installment, Jesse Chadwick, portrayed by John Thomson, noticed Gail struggling to breathe and holding her arm as she looked for a bike pump, then called for an ambulance to take her to the hospital.
After Helen, 73, who has portrayed Gail, the matriarch of the Platt family for 50 years, revealed in June that she would be departing from the ITV soap opera this year after a significant storyline for the Platt family.

Announcing her departure in June, she stated: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world. I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding.“

“I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew. The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.”
