Liam Payne Passed Away At 31
Local authorities have confirmed to PEOPLE that Liam Payne died at age 31 after “jumping from the balcony” of his hotel room.
Pablo Policicchio, the communications director for the Buenos Aires Security Ministry, informed about the update on Wednesday, Oct. 16, regarding the death of the One Direction singer, as reported by the Associated Press.
Policía Federal Argentina confirmed to PEOPLE that Payne died after falling multiple stories at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Police arrived at the location just after 5 p.m. and Payne was reported to have passed away shortly after.
According to Alberto Crescenti, head of SAME, the public emergency medical services system in Buenos Aires, Payne suffered a skull base fracture after the fall, as reported by Argentine news channel TN.
Local police informed PEOPLE that they are currently conducting an investigation to establish the details of the tragedy, and mentioned that an autopsy will be carried out.
According to a 911 call that was translated by news sources like Sky News and the BBC, the hotel’s main receptionist informed the police because they were concerned about Payne’s actions.
As per a La Nacion transcript that was translated, the worker claimed the musician was drunk and believed he was “under the influence of alcohol and drugs,” stressing the need for someone to come to the location “urgently.” Payne’s name was not believed to have been brought up during the entire phone conversation.
Hotel Manager Told The Police
According to Sky News, the employee indicated that the guest could be at risk as he was “in a room with a balcony.”
“We’re afraid he could do something that threatens his life,” said the manager, identified as “Esteban,” as reported by the outlet.
The worker mentioned in the BBC transcript reported that Payne had been “destroying the whole room” prior to his death.
People globally still honor Payne, who gained fame on The X-Factor U.K. in 2010 with his One Direction bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson. Styles, Malik, Horan and Tomlinson have not yet made any comments.
Payne is alive in his 7-year-old son Bear Grey, fathered with his ex-partner, Girls Aloud vocalist Cheryl.
